February 9: Meal Monday (Scotland) (oatmeal and porridge)

A hearty breakfast awaits you on Meal Monday! From the 17th century to the late 19th century, Scottish university students lived a meager existence. They heated their rooms with firewood or peat they salvaged themselves and they lived primarily on oatmeal and porridge. Long weekends allowed them to replenish supplies on Monday, which was called Meal Monday.

Oatmeal remains a favorite beyond being a period version of Top Ramen.
