September 3: Enjoy Rice Dishes on National Rice Month!

Rice is the staple ingredient in the diet of millions of people worldwide, so why not take the time to celebrate this nutritious and versatile foodstuff during National Rice Month? Once spooned generously into rice bowls, it can be topped with all manner of things - aromatic curries, spicy chili con carnes and meaty kebabs to name but a few.

The origins of rice are shrouded in mystery, for so long has the crop been cultivated and consumed. Most archaeologists agree that it began its long history in China perhaps more than 13,000 years ago. It later spread to South Asia, where it's formed the basis of innumerable dishes ever since.

Incredibly, rice accounts for around 20% of the world's total calorie consumption. This arguably makes it the most important crop on the planet. As fundamental as it may be, it also merits its place in contemporary cooking: if you're looking to try out some artistic food photography, multicolored rice grains are ideal because of their striking appearance.
