June 2: Row up to some Chinese specials this Dragon Boat Festival

Enjoy a 2,000 year old tradition with Chinese-inspired recipes! When China was but seven warring states, Qu Yuan was minister of Chu. He intended to declare war against Qin. Unfortunately, Qu was banished by the emperor after another aristocrat slandered him. While in exile, Qu composed patriotic poems which remain famous today. In 279 BC, he drowned himself in the Miluo River before the Qin takeover.  Distraught by his disappearance, local peasants searched the river for his body and threw zongzi into the river to distract fish from eating his remains.

The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates Qu Yuan's contributions and the endearing search for him. Participants race elaborate Dragon Boats and consume zongzi. While zongzi is a traditional dish for this day, the opportunity to experiment with other options in Chinese cooking remains. Honor the Dragon Boat Festival and experiment with Chinese flavors today with online food recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers!
