February 25: Have a Hot Clam Chowder Treat on National Clam Chowder Day

Time to snuggle up with a sumptuous bowl of clam chowder on today's National Clam Chowder Day! This delicious stew traces its origins in the United States, particularly in New England and contains clams and broth. Clam chowders were initially served in restaurants on Fridays as a seafood option for those who abstain from meat on Fridays for religious reasons. Even though the Catholic denomination has since reduced abstinence from meat to Lent, the tradition of serving clam chowders on Fridays lives on.

Today, there are several variants and styles of clam chowders. One of the more prominent ones is the New England Clam Chowder, which is a lot thicker than other regional styles. Meanwhile, the Manhattan Clam Chowder is known for adding tomato for color and flavor. Fun fact: a 1939 bill making tomatoes in clam chowder illegal was introduced in the Maine legislature, where the New England Clam Chowder originates.
