February 28: Savour Taiwanese Cuisine this Taiwan Memorial Peace Day

Today, Dishfolio food bloggers join our Taiwanese friends in commemorating Taiwan's Memorial Peace Day. After Taiwan's independence from Japan in 1947 and subsequent overtaking of China of the island, misunderstanding broke out between the new government and the Taiwanese residents leading to tragic losses for the Taiwanese people.  For years the day was a taboo topic until 1995 when then President Lee Teng-hui apologized to the Taiwanese people and made steps to heal the wounds left by history.

Today, February 28th is celebrated in Taiwan as Memorial Peace Day and marked by memorial services for the victims, concerts, art exhibitions, and group runs. Our Dishfolio food bloggers share their favorite Taiwanese recipes in honor of the national holiday. Taiwanese cuisine has been characterized by its geographical location as a small island surrounded by sea and seafood figures prominently in their daily meals. Famous dishes from Taiwan include the Oyster omelet, which is made with eggs, oysters, tapioca starch, and Garland chrysanthemum leaves as well as the boba milk tea, more commonly known as bubble tea, which was born from the streets of Taiwan in the 1980s.
