July 9: Enjoy a Barbecue Staple this Baked Bean Month

Baked beans are a cold weather favorite, but July is the month Americans love them the most! In 2009, Americans consumed 50 million pounds of baked beans during July.

Very few barbecues or picnics are without baked beans, making them a desired side with hamburgers or hot dogs or even available as quick appetizer recipes. High in fiber and protein, baked beans also offer health benefits including a reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers. Traditional online food recipes for baked beans include mainly molasses, brown sugar and ketchup. Non-vegetarian recipes may include bacon or pork fat for flavor. Use canned beans for ease or dried beans for a more from-scratch flavor. Maple syrup can add sweetness or chili pepper can add spice. This popular dish features both new cooking challenges and traditional flavor for your next potluck or picnic!
