March 7: Spend The National Cereal Day with Crunchy Treats

Happy National Cereal Day! The word cereal came from Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. Cereal however is actually a type of grass and the part we get to eat is its grains, which is actually a type of fruit called caryopsis. Cereal grains were first developed as far back as 12,000 years ago by ancient farming communities in the Fertile Crescent region.

Did you know that the first breakfast cereal was made in the United States in 1863? James Caleb Jackson made a cereal called the Granula, however it never did quite gain a following because you had to soak the sturdy bran nuggets overnight just to be able to chew it. On National Cereal Day, you can enjoy your favorite breakfast cereal, or better yet, get a little experimental try out these creative online food recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers! Cereals are of such varying textures and colors that they also make for some amazing food styling photography!
