This tradition is actually celebrated in Sweden and and Swedish folks indulge in waffle eating this time of the year. The tradition comes from Vårfrudagen, which actually means "Our Lady's Day" but if spoken in Swedish sounds a lot like Waffle Day. While the religious celebration of "Our Lady's Day" coincides with Waffle Day, the two don't actually have any significant relation.
The waffle is in fact a leavened or battered dough cooked between two plates to give each side a specific mirrored pattern. There are a myriad of variations of the waffle, depending on both recipe and the type of iron used. Belgium alone has a dozen regional varieties for waffles!
