September 30: Join Family and Community Day in Australia with Lunch Recipes to Share with Family!

Family and Community Day has been celebrated as a public holiday in the Australian Capital Territory since 2007, and is designated to give those who work extensive hours a chance to spend time with their families. It might not make a national holiday in the United States, but at Dishfolio we think it's such a good idea that it's worth marking with healthy lunch meals for the family.

It's widely known that barbecued food is hugely popular in Australia, so you might want to mark Family and Community Day with a barbecue lunch of your own. Although we immediately identify barbecues with Australian culture, the origins of the term 'barbecue' are traced to the Spanish word 'barbacoa', referring to a wooden frame used to slow-cook meat.

Did you know that barbecuing is compatible with healthy eating, mainly because of the lack of oil used on barbecues and the fact that virtually anything can be cooked using this method? Burgers and sausages shouldn't be the extent of barbecue cooking, as our online food recipes show.
