October 8: Celebrate Peruvian Navy Day with Cuisine from Peru!

Lots of countries around the world celebrate Navy Day, and Peru is no exception. This celebration marks the anniversary of the country's Navy, which was established in 1821, and also commemorates the Battle of Angamos of 1879.

As with many Peruvian holidays, Navy Day is celebrated through the preparation and consumption of traditional Peruvian cuisine. Often, this is centered on corn, potatoes and chili peppers, because these crops can be grown within the country. Here at Dishfolio we'd like to try a papa rellena, which is a mashed potato stuffed with ingredients like meat and olives, and then deep fried.

Did you know that, in many areas of Peru, they still practice cooking methods that date back to the ancient Incas? Peruvian cuisine is a long-standing yet diverse art, which has been influenced over the centuries by different immigrant communities. Why not try some Peruvian-inspired family dinner recipes today?

Fish Ceviche Recipe

Like most ceviche recipes this is a simple, pragmatic approach. I lean towards a Mexican or Costa Rican ceviche more than a Peruvian or other South American methods. This is my go-to, post work-out Sunday snack. It has the right elements of tang, while still respecting the essence of fish. The fish flavors are muted by a fresh blend of aromatics and lime juice.
