July 29: Sugary Confections on National Cotton Candy Day!

Cotton candy was designed as a way to bring sugary treats to the masses, because sugar was expensive, and not everyone could afford sweets. It was invented by William Morrison and John C. Wharton in 1897, and was first available to by at the 1904 world fair. Although it was expensive, it was much cheaper than other sweets.

Today, cotton candy is available all over the world, and goes by many names. It is also available in different flavors, including fruit and bubblegum. It is associated with fairs and fetes, and is renowned for bringing back childhood memories!

Interestingly, William Morrison, one of the men credited with inventing cotton candy, was a dentist! And, in 1921, another dentist named Joseph Lascaux, invented a very similar product! If you own your own cotton candy machine and plan on making cotton candy for yourself, you can find lots of online food recipes to help you enjoy your own cotton candy.
