July 10: Have Some Fun Fruity Drinks on National Pina Colada Day!

Ever since rum was distilled, people have been drinking what would today be called the Piña Colada. The first record of anyone drinking a Piña Colada is from 1922. However, three Puerto Rican bartenders all claim to have invented the drink sometime around the 1950s. Whoever invented it, why not pull up a chair and enjoy your own delicious Piña Colada today?

Since its creation, the Piña Colada has spread from the Caribbean to the United States and beyond. It is popular the world over, and there are lots of different Piña Colada mixes that have developed from the original recipe, such as the Staten Island Ferry.

Interestingly, the Piña Colada saw its popularity soar after Rupert Holmes' song "Escape", known as "the Piña Colada song", was released in 1979. The exotic drink conjures up images of beautiful Caribbean beaches, and has inspired some truly beautiful culinary photography.
