May 29: Biscuits for Any Meal this National Biscuit Day

Time to celebrate that staple for all meals-biscuits! To Americans, the biscuit is the soft and flaky bread product that works for breakfast and dinner. No matter its form or function, the biscuit is a coveted food item that can be baked for any meal.


Biscuits have a white flour and butter base and use baking soda as a leavening agent. Early biscuit varieties include hard tack, which was the unleavened bread of long sailing journeys. With the invention of baking soda in the early 19th century, hard tack evolved from an unappetizing snack with the consistency of cardboard to the flaky decadent side we enjoy today. Use these recipes for breakfast favorites like biscuits and gravy or prepare them to accompany dinner tonight.
